In a colorless world, Jonas sees what others cannot.

Jonas stands in a dim, high-contrast bathing chamber corridor. Beyond a half-open door, Fiona is seen from behind, standing by the bath, her bare back and red hair blazing with color in a monochrome world. Steam curls around her. The rest of the room and Jonas are in grayscale.

Chapter prose
Jonas walked the empty corridor, footsteps muffled by soft, gray flooring. The community was always silent this hour—orderly, muted, a world composed of infinite shades between white and black. He felt the weight of memory, the ache of what he had seen and what he could not share. He paused before the door to the bathing chamber. The red glow of a warming lamp spilled into the hall, though in this world 'red' was only an idea—something he alone truly saw. He lingered, his hand hovering above the latch. He was searching for Fiona, searching for the only other soul who made him question the certainty of Sameness. The door slid open with a faint press. Steam curled around him, blurring the sharp edges of the tiles. At the far end, Fiona stood by the bath, her back to him, shoulders bare and vulnerable. Jonas almost turned away. But in that moment— Her hair shimmered. For a second, a living brilliance flashed within the gray: cascading waves of ginger-red, ablaze where the light touched. It was not a memory, not a vision given by the Giver. It was here, now, alive in this room. Jonas felt the world tilt. The rest of the chamber—the towels, the tiles, his own reflection in the glass—remained desaturated, washed of all hue. Only Fiona’s hair burned with color. He stared, breath caught. It was a secret only he could see. Fiona glanced over her shoulder, face open, eyes questioning. "Jonas?" He found his voice. "You… your hair—it's beautiful." Fiona smiled, not understanding. She wrapped a towel around herself, warmth rising in her cheeks. "Thank you?" He stepped closer, lowering his voice. "Do you ever see things… differently? Like the sky, or your hair… like they're alive?" She shook her head gently, her eyes soft with concern. "Only you say such things, Jonas. I think I wish I could." Jonas wanted to reach out, to run his fingers through the flame that only he could witness. Instead, he stood silent, the ache of longing and the thrill of wonder entwined in his chest. In that instant, memory and present blurred—the world held its breath, and Jonas knew, in his heart, that love was as real and vivid as color. Even if it was invisible to everyone else. He watched as Fiona left the chamber, the red in her hair fading as the door slid shut. Jonas pressed his hand to the cool tile wall and closed his eyes, holding on to that flicker of color, and the hope that one day, he might share what he saw. The gray world pressed in, but now, it would never be truly colorless again.
