Chapter prose
The Dragon Kingdom was not meant for silence. Once, laughter and the flapping of mighty wings filled the sky. Now, only the wind howled over the barren plateaus of the Artisans’ Realm. Gems lay scattered like tears across the grass, and crystal statues caught the hard morning light—frozen dragons, their eyes pleading, their voices stilled. Spyro—smaller than most, but blazing purple and full of fire—skidded to a halt atop a mossy ridge. Sparx, his ever-glowing dragonfly friend, hovered close, his wings anxious. Spyro’s heart hammered as he took in the sight: Delbin, the kind-hearted craftsman, encased in shimmering crystal. Beyond, others shimmered in the same prison: elders, warriors, scholars—all defeated without a fight. “Gnasty Gnorc did this,” Spyro growled, heat rising in his throat. The wind carried no answer, but a distant crash—metal on stone—echoed through the ruins. Spyro felt a surge of helplessness, but Sparx gave a quick, reassuring buzz, circling his head. Spyro pressed his snout close to Delbin’s crystal prison. Inside, Delbin’s kindly face was frozen mid-warning, his tools caught mid-tumble. Spyro’s reflection warped across the surface—a small dragon, staring at what he could not fix. Not yet. “I won’t let him get away with this,” Spyro whispered. “Not to my friends.” He thought of the elder Tomas, the blue dragon who told stories of dragon valor. Of Delbin, who had once taught Spyro to bend metal and shape a shield. Of all the dragons who had believed in him, even when he was just a hatchling chasing butterflies. The ground trembled. Spyro spun, ready. At the far edge of the clearing, a lumbering Gnorc appeared—armor-clad, uglier than legend, dragging a sack of stolen gems. Its eyes narrowed when it saw Spyro, and it sneered, swinging a heavy club. Spyro’s resolve sharpened. He dodged as the Gnorc charged, breathing a quick puff of fire. The Gnorc stumbled, dropping a handful of gems—proof that hope, too, was hard to keep contained. The battle was brief, and when the Gnorc fled, Sparx zipped to collect the scattered jewels, his gold wings flickering in delight. Spyro padded back to Delbin, the heat of victory burning low in his chest. “I’m not giving up,” he said, louder this time, for any dragon—crystallized or free—to hear. “I’ll find Gnasty Gnorc. I’ll free every last dragon!” A tiny voice seemed to echo from within Delbin’s crystal: “Courage, young one.” Spyro blinked back the sting in his eyes. The journey would be dangerous. Gnorc minions were everywhere, and the path ahead wound through worlds unknown. But Spyro’s anger had become a promise. He would fight, not just for revenge, but for every dragon robbed of their chance to soar. With Sparx beside him, Spyro set off, head held high, the morning sun glinting off crystal prisons behind him. For the first time since the disaster, hope crackled in the air—bright, defiant, and purple as a dragon’s first real roar.
